Launched in 2003 yet founded on four decades of experience, Ortman Family Vineyards is a young winery with an old soul, a new venture that remains firmly rooted in family winemaking and agricultural tradition. Its story begins 35 years ago, when Chuck Ortman sparked an illustrious winemaking career by risking his future to become an entry-level cellar worker. And it continues today as Chuck is joined by son and winemaker Matt Ortman to craft a new generation of Ortman wines.
While Chuck prepared to tie up his 15-year position as founding winemaker at Meridian Vineyards, Matt switched gears from engineering to winemaking, a transition that included an apprenticeship at the famed Castello di Gabbiano winery in Tuscany in 2001. By the end of 2001, all of the inaugural releases of Ortman Family Vineyards were in the barrel. In 2003, the release of these wines heralded a new era for the Ortmans.
